Introduction to natural sleep remedies

[Top]

There might be several reasons why you are finding it difficult to sleep. I'll go out on a limb and say that most people have had difficulty sleeping in their lives.

I know I have plenty of times. I've also seen people close to me, go to the doctor and get dumped with a load of sleeping pills.

In most cases it didn't seem to do much good or their were a bunch of side effects.

This prompted me to look at alternative methods.

Lifestyle and stress

Stress will make it difficult for anybody go to sleep, see my page on ways to manage stress. Drinking any form of caffeine before bed time will not do you any favours.

Lay off alcohol before bedtime, my experience in the past is that after drinking alcohol I drift off to sleep but wake up a couple of hours later and can't get back to sleep.

Sugary food such as cakes will also disturb your sleep.

Melatonin

Melatonin is a hormone, which is found in humans and the majority of animals, as well as various other living organisms. Melatonin plays an essential part in regulating the circadian cycle.

A randomized double blind study was conducted by researchers in Glasgow, Scotland and done over a three week period to test the efficiency and safety of melatoin taken by insomnia patients who were aged 55 and over.

Valerian/All-heal

Lavender oil

[Top]

Try using a touch of lavender oil on your pillow to help you get to sleep. Lavender has been found to have some sedative effects.
