The yohimbe tree is indigenous to western Africa. The tree bark contains a chemical known as yohimbine.The amount of the chemical in dietary supplements can vary; some yohimbe products have been discovered to have very little of the chemical.

What yohimbe is used for

Yohimbe bark has been used for centuries in some western African nations for sexual enhancement. For many centuries, people from these countries have ingested the bark and the compound to enhance their sexual prowess as well as an aphrodisiac.

The bark has used as a hallucinogen. It has also been used to treat hypertension and angina.

Today it is employed to treat sexual dysfunction in men.

The bark extracts are used in tablets and capsules as well as tea.

Science Says

A study was done by the institute of sports medicine in Serbia and Montenegro to test the yohimbe supplementation on exercise performance and body composition in professional football players.

The 20 players were separated into two separate groups. One group were given tablets which contained yohimbe for 21 days the other group were given a placebo.

The results showed that body fat in the yohimbe group had decreased. In addition, the fat mass was notably lower.


Side effects and cautions

The side affects may include sleeplessness, anxiety, increased heart rate as well as high blood pressure.

If it is consumed over long period of time it can be dangerous caution should be exercised if it is taken with high blood pressure medication or MAO inhibitors

Do not combine phenothiazines or tricyclic antidepressants with the bark

Those who have psychiatric conditions or kidney problems should not use it.
